Air-to-air camera solution
Laage, Germany
2017
During this project, we had the great opportunity to shoot with the German Air Force.

I asked for three ground units including a drone and had seven cameras spread inside two of the Typhoons.

I asked the pilots to circle around our ground units.

As far as I remember, it was Kurosawa who once did this to shoot a dialogue scene in a forest.
The Protagonists walked in circles around the camera, creating a long tracking-like shot.

This way, we could capture some amazing flight maneuvers instead of just catching the jets flying by.

Life is continuos flow.

Life is full of contradictions.

Are our intersections interests or values?

Is there a way to transform interests into values?

TECH FOOTNOTE
During production, we use Sony FS-7 and FS-5 Camcorders.

Our ultra-mobile, B-Roll- and Stills-gear are a couple of Sony A7SII-Cameras and GM- and Zeiss Batis-Lenses.
S-Log profiles match very nicely.
Besides that, I carry either my personal A7SII, A6500 or A9-Camera.

My personal A7SII had serious issues after a couple of weeks, the monitor switches off.

Some of the Alpha-Cameras had thermal issues even when temperature shut off set to high.

One of the A7SII stopped recording several times during critical scenes in 20-25 Degree-Celsius surroundings without warning.
Had to re-shoot some scenes.

A7SII Cameras are useless when shooting video in flickering light.
Lack of clear scan-shutter.

All settings get lost when changing batteries.
This contradicts pro applications.

10 Bit Video recording (internal) and output needed.

After several months of use, my personal FE 24-70 GM lens looses its rubber-cover of the zoom-ring.
I assume this will soon happen with the 16-35 GM and with the 70-200 GM Lenses as well.

Materials are neither premium nor durable.

Optical quality of 24-70 GM-Lens is good in terms of sharpness, its Bokeh is ugly and very busy, field curvature is quite pronounced.

One FS-7 failed to write correctly during critical shoot.
Complex recovery process was required.

Sony's mirrorless flagship Camera ILCE-A9 destroys
several files on both card slots when changing batteries during shoot.

This is especially annoying when shooting with CEOs, Heads of global organizations. or other outstanding protagonists.

Tech failure can be reproduced.

Loading files to your Computer will make OS X crash.

Sony needs to re-structure buffer and write process in correlation with power supply.
This includes both, image files and camera settings.

Tech ambition of Sony is outstanding.
I love the Alpha Camera-series.

Built, weather- and dust sealing, durability and reliability of both, Alpha Series-Cameras and GM-Lenses are not up to demanding pro tasks.

Since spring 2017 I've been working on a global documentary series about today.

So far, the project has taken the team(s) and me to people, stories and destinations in 16 different countries around the globe.
This project is very demanding, both, creatively, and energy-wise.
It's ongoing.

Here are some impressions I captured on the go.
Most of the photographs I took are production-exclusive and won't be published here.
