REFLECTIONS ON SINGULARITY:
When I take a look at many photo blogs or sites, I see many pictures look alike.
Many photographs could be printed as postcards as they are fulfilling perfect cliches or striving for technical and compositional perfection.
Those cliches might be described as captured visual information correlating with our collective imprinting.
Imprinting, both individual and collective, lead to expectation as soon as we add emotion.

What makes an image, a photograph unique?
What defines our singularity as human beings?

Life is continuos thermodynamic flow, immanent change of state.
Those moments we capture with our minds, our cameras, our technology are singular local thermodynamic states.
A singular thermodynamic state is always a snapshot of an ever changing flow.

Maybe unique images, moments, states are defined by differentials of the well-defined (the collective imprinting) and the momentariness, the fugacity of another state.
If you take a picture of a human in front of a steady background for example, you might have a great differential of the well defined (background) and the transcendency, the fugacity of the state (of the person) you are portraying / documenting.
The larger this differential, the more unique the image.
To our perception, it is all about the contrast (the differential) between steady states and dynamics.
In addition, this illusion of being able to master time by freezing it,
the act of photographing is a counterbalance to our deep narcissistic wound of knowing we won't live forever.

If you take a look at the amazing landscapes of Salgado for example, one of these photographs alone might be beautiful.
But it does not unfold the same impact to our mind as one of his photographs of people.
Only in sequence, a series - in correlation with other of his landscape photographs - this one landscape will unfold a very strong impact.
When it comes to documenting steady states with little dynamics, the scope, the amount of images will add to emotion.
Only this scope will reveal that even mountains, breathtaking landscapes are just temporarily states, thermodynamic phases that won't last forever.
It is also true that this is why we appreciate the oeuvre of an artist, the amount of dedication and craft someone puts to her or his work in correlation with our own finiteness.

On the other hand, one single photograph of a human by an unknown photographer can find its way to collective imprinting.
Because this one photograph might portray a deep truthful moment of human life.
I am an amateur photographer because I haven't started to tell deep truthful stories about transcendent states in life.
