Professionalism and Art.

While Professionalism might begin where money comes into the play,

Art might begin where money does not determine the creative process.

This does neither mean that money will create professionalism,

nor does it mean that the absence of money will automatically create art.

In most cases, both, in professional work and when creating art, tools are overrated.

Tools - and the craft to apply them properly - are just a fundament.

And yes, sometimes a steadicam is a more appropriate tool than a gimbal.
It's driven by inertia, it makes gravity perceptible.

Gimbals work by electronic correction pulses, most of the time they do not create the feeling of grounding.

Thank you, Garret Brown!

Craft is the result of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, constant learning.
Craft emerges from numerous repetitions.

The more different principles you know - how to approach a specific question - the more versatile the creative kit of your mind.

You only get there by investing a lot of time, thirst for knowledge, openness and the will to learn every day.

Besides continuos repetitions, building a solid craft takes a lot of patience.

This includes many setbacks.

The more versatile the toolkit of your mind, the more creative and the more surprising the outcome.

What we describe as creativity is identifying patterns of events, images, shapes, definitions, conceptions and so on...
Then finding the intersections and re-combining.

Strongly creative people combine this ability with a comprehensive toolkit.

Ingenuity is a myth of man.

In the end it comes down to pattern recognition and pattern application.

Most stable flow processes - in storytelling, in working, in creating and in life in general follow the golden number.

The "golden number" is a philosophical-mathematical description of a constant geometric natural flow pattern based on thermodynamics.

Our minds follow the very same geometry.

Only dedication can possibly create excellence.

If you are familiar with the Pareto principle you know that you always have to go the extra-mile to achieve something

that has the potential to stand out from the rest.

Take all your skills, your craft, your dedication and go to places you have never been before.

There is no guarantee that your work is considered to be well-made or even a piece of art.

But both, professionalism and creation (of art) have some intersections...

If dedication means giving in to something - your story, your subject, your object -
for a timespan long enough to create or to capture something truthful, than you might get close.

Dedication in filmmaking and in photography means understanding and, of course, creating and / or capturing the essence of a moment.

A very wise teacher at film school once told us:

Listen to the material.

Once you found it, let go and listen to the material.

The material is always wiser than you are.

You might be a pro but not an artist.
You might be an artist but not a pro.

There are artists who are pros.
There are pros who are artists.

Whether or not you're an artist is determined by people who pay for your work, by theaters, museums, and by publishers and art galleries displaying your work.

As soon as people pay for your work, your work quickly becomes determined by money.

Art is quite paradox.

Professionalism isn't.
